One day in Hakone

If you've been following my Instagram you'll know that we took a day trip down to Hakone, a town famous for its hot spring resorts and unfiltered view of Mount Fuji. Although we didn't have a chance to relax at an onsen we did travel around much of Hakone to catch some spectacular sights.

Just 1.5 hours away from Tokyo, we hopped on the Odakyu Romance Car (an express train) from Shinjuku station and bought a cute Romance Car bento box on board. Purchase your tickets for the Romance Car at Shinjuku station either in advance or on the day. The timetable can be found here along with more information!

Hakone's shrine was a 25 minute bus ride away from the station. Make sure you jump off at Motohakone if you want to visit the shrine and catch a sight of the waterside Torii gate rising up from the shores of Lake Ashi. On a clear day you'll also see Mount Fuji posing in the background!

Our last stop of the day was to Owakudani, an active volcanic valley on Mount Hakone. This area was unbelievable, you can literally see the sulphuric fumes escaping the vents in the volcano. The hot springs at Owakudani are used to make onsen tamago (hot spring eggs) which turn black due to the high volume of sulphur in the water. Don't worry about the colour, cracking open the shell will reveal a normal looking hard boiled egg! Legend has it that consuming just one egg grants longevity, adding 7 years to your life.

I was able to navigate Hakone and the transport system thanks to my mobile wifi router from Japan Wireless! I don't dare to think where I would've ended up without them..

Would you visit Hakone?
